5,000+ trucks a day arrive in the UK from continental Europe. Due to the sheer volume of traffic, Border Force are only able to check around 10% of inbound trailers. During the last 12 months they detected 56,000 migrants.

Nobody knows how many get through.

Stowaways can gain entry at any stage of the transport movement. The further this is from Calais (for example) the longer they will remain inside the trailer and the more damage/contamination is likely to occur.

All parties in the food supply chain (producers, manufacturers, hauliers, importers, retailers etc) are classed as FBO's (Food Business Operators) and have legal responsibilities under regulation EC178/2002.   There are heavy penalities when these regulations are breached.
